It’s just with the end which begins to falter, however the slap-upwards finale rescues they about ‘red’. Admirably staged and you can intelligently dialogued, it has no higher difficulties into the way of living off its incredibly ugly identity.” [ 8 ]
Monthly Film Bulletin said “The film motions at the an easy pace, the fresh discussion is slick and characterisations essentially productive. Cock Powell and Evelyn Keyes lead the fresh new cast professionally, as investigator is actually played with considerable aplomb by the that individual personality, Lee J. Cobb.” [ 9 ]
Richard Brody from the The fresh Yorker detailed “That it terse and you can taut motion picture noir try according to the fresh new intimate and you may top-notch problems of title profile, the new criminal genius (starred by the Knob Powell) trailing a stylish unlawful gambling enterprise. The newest film’s blogger and you will movie director, Robert Rossen, sets up an effective multidimensional chess game, to have mortal limits, ranging from Johnny, their company (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s partner (Ellen Drew), an effective cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and good scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whoever sibling (Nina Foch) did on casino and you may old an effective corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). The fresh new caustically epigrammatic program, this new cast’s suavely controlled body gestures of love and risk, and Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you may smartly cocky pictures (and additionally his political conscience) make this pugnacious but really in depth spectacle a low profile classic of your own style.” [ 10 ]

Photo provides actions and you may suspense, and you may particular brief satisfies out-of jokes to incorporate taste. Ace shows of the Manhood Powell, because a playing domestic overseer, and you may Lee J. Cobb, as a police inspector, in addition to in the score . While the patch comes after a common pattern, the latest characterizations is actually fresh and the performances adequate to overbalance. Dialog is terse and you can relevant, avoiding the emotional, phoney touching. Unusual digital camera basics come-along once in a while in order to escalate desire and you can briefly arrest the attention. Good teamplay of the Robert Rossen, increasing due to the fact director-scripter, and you may Milton Holmes, amazing creator and you may associate music producer, also helps with making it a smooth manufacturing.” [ 11 ]

Its primarily an issue of viewing Mr. Powell proceed through their paces fashionably while a big cast regarding actors and you will stars promote him regular service. Evelyn Keyes plays the favorable absolutely nothing woman just who brings out the newest finest in him and you may Ellen Received is the sleek and slinky vixen which will get your towards the jams. Thomas Gomez are greasy once the villain and Lee J. Cobb do a different in a position concert tour once the an exhausted cops inspector who eventually closes the situation. Significant amounts of taking and you can puffing is done of the most of the concerned.” [ a dozen ]
